Writer, Director, Actor, and Educator

Tory Doctor is a Calgary-based writer, librettist, director, actor, and educator with more than thirty years of professional theatre experience. He brings an actor’s instincts, a director’s eye, and a writer’s curiosity to every room.

At Calgary Actors’ Studio, Tory is the Musical Theatre Director for 2026 and has led SummerACT musical theatre programs from 2019 through 2026. His professional theatre work includes productions connected with Disney and Cameron Mackintosh, as well as performance work in Japan and across North America.

Writing & Creative Work

Tory has spent decades making theatre from every side of the room and a lifetime loving fantasy storytelling. A longtime tabletop role-player, he brings that imagination to Off the Beaten Path—his funny, heartfelt interactive fantasy musical, developed since 2019 through more than 100 table reads, four public workshop performances, and a newest script with more than 300 possible versions.

 Teaching & Coaching Philosophy

Tory’s approach to coaching is rooted in his belief that preparation is the foundation of great performance. His mission is to equip students with the skills, confidence, and presence to walk into any audition room—whether for community theatre or Broadway—and stand out. His training covers character development, movement, audition technique, and the deeper connection between an actor and their role.

Tory is well known in Calgary as the in-game host for the Calgary Wranglers and Calgary Hitmen, performing as his character, Doctor Hitmen. Each winter, he also brings festive energy to corporate and public events as The Grinch.
